Sub-Saharan Africa
Soweto, South Africa
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa in the 2000s, I reported stories ranging from environmental degradation in Rwanda to the conflict in Eastern Congo to the new fad of car spinning in South Africa's townships.
I spent more than a year reporting in central Mozambique on American efforts to restore a long-forgotten game reserve called Gorongosa; this story, complete with political intrigue, sacred spirits and stunning wildlife, is the focus of my book, White Man's Game.
I have also travelled to Kenya, where I reported on issues related to statelessness.
