Sub-Saharan Africa

Soweto, South Africa
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa from 2005 to 2009, I reported stories ranging from environmental degradation in Rwanda to the conflict in Eastern Congo to the new fad of car spinning in South Africa's townships.
I spent more than a year reporting in central Mozambique on American efforts to restore a long-forgotten game reserve called Gorongosa; this story, complete with political intrigue, sacred spirits and stunning wildlife, is the focus of an ongoing book-length project.
I returned recently from Kenya, where I was looking at issues related to statelessness.
